How Do You Know If a Headache Is Serious?
Headaches are commonplace and in a large number of instances, not a matter for concern. Some headaches, however, can point towards a severe medical condition. Knowing when medical treatment is needed is critical for your well-being.
Most headaches aren’t dangerous, though a few necessitate urgent care. Be aware of signs of distress and visit a physician when needed. If in doubt, visit a physician in case there is an underlying, severe issue.

Signs of a Serious Headache
Some headaches require urgent care. Watch for these warning signs:
- Severe, sudden pain: A headache of a sort you have never experienced can be a brain aneurysm.
- Vision disturbances: Blurry, double, or otherwise altered vision may signal a neurological issue.
- Slowing of speech or confusion: Difficulty in expressing words, or sudden confusion, can signal a stroke.
- Weakness or numbness: Numbness in your face, arms, or legs can be a dangerous situation, such as a stroke.
- Stiff neck and fever: Such signs may signal meningitis, a serious infection.
- Headache due to an injury: If your head is injured and a headache occurs, it can be a brain bleed or a concussion.
Types of Serious Headaches
Some headache types are more urgent than others:
- Thunderclap Headache: Sudden, severe headache in a matter of seconds. Can be a signal of a brain bleed.
- Migraine with Aura: While frequent, aura experiences of flashing lights, numbness, or difficulty speaking can be stroke risk factors.
- Rebound Headache: Repeated usage of painkillers can result in frequent headaches, making medical consultation necessary.
When to See a Doctor
You should seek medical attention if:
- The headache is different from your usual headaches.
- Worstens with time, or is unimproved on treatment.
- Awakes in the middle of the night, or occurs on effort.
- It is accompanied by other neurological signs, for example, dizziness or fainting.
